Bowl Championship Series Controversy by Tom Ribaudo December 20, 2006

The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) has been a mess since the beginning of its time. They have been the ones selecting who would go to the national championship in college football, and who would not. Sports analysts have been trying to figure out the best way to solve the problem that seems so simple to fix, and yet, has not been done. The selection is a huge controversy every single year, and they still do nothing to find a solution.
The BCS method is to take three different polls, of two human polls and one computer poll, and put them all together into one poll to help decide. Then numbers get shot out, and there you have your bowl selections. It is all based on numbers and the computer polls seem to really take more of their third of the poll than they deserve. Every year, one team has a problem with the idea, and it becomes a big disappointment to all the fans around the country.
The logical thing to do is to create a four or eight team playoff, where the BCS decides which teams are in, and which teams are not. That way all those teams have a real chance to make it to the national championship. Unfortunately for fans all around the country, this logical idea has not been created yet. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) would make lots more money if this were to happen, the excitement level would become much more extreme and college football would be better than ever before. Plus, there would be no controversy of who is the best team in the country when it is all said and done.
Sometimes the BCS comes down to three teams who should be in the national title game, but of course, only two can make it. This problem always leads to arguing and complaints from fans and the team that is left out. With a playoff in place, everything would be solved and the country would find out who the real national champs are. The BCS should either be gone forever or fixed up to set up a playoff bracket.

I agree with you on some points. The BCS does seem useless sometimes, but overall it is not that bad. For example, Michigan had their chance playing Ohio State, so i think another team (Florida) should get a chance to play Ohio State. The BCS has messed up a few times, but in general it is good.

  2. Kevin Raff Says:

I agree with you fully. I cant believe that they don’t see what is right in front of them. If there was a playoff then that means more games and more fun. Great article!

I do not like the idea of an eight team playoff decided by the BCS. Its crazy. You would still have the same problem we have now with no playoff. The “playoffs” are taken care of in rivalry games, such as USC vs Notre Dame ang Ohio State vs Michigan. These games help eliminate possibilities for the NAtional Championship. The last few weeks of the season are the playoffs. SC’s schedule is perfect: Oregon, Cal, Notre Dame and UCLA. Another is, is that the BCS allows the NCAA D-I football to be unique. No other sport has that. If anything should happen I think that College Football should rid itself of the BCS and go back to the days before it.

  4. Tyler Huddleston Says:

i agree the bcs has ruined football and has not always been correct in the the past. first off a computer has no choice deciding what team is the best, whn they have no idea. the deciding should be a playoff as stated to find who the real champions are.

  5. Mike Horan Says:

Hey Tom, I think that you are right about BCS and they should be fixed rather than be gone foever because they should get a chance. Also, the BCS poll counter with the computer is cool and i didnt know about that.

  6. Cameron Perkins Says:

I agree with the article they do need to find another method of picking a title game because some undefeated teams dont even get the recognition that they should de to this bcs system.
    nice article tom.

  7. Darren Fitch Says:

I strongly agrre with Tom. I hate the bcs just because USC has been screwed by it so many times. And it’s not just USC, it’s other school to. If there was a playoff bracket things would be much easier to manage and see who the finnal two top teams are. The bcs is over rated.

  8. Kyran Johnson Says:

I agree with you 100%. The way the BCS has it set up, they are better off just rolling dice!

  9. Chad Miller Says:

The BCS should be taken out and there should be a playoff put in its place

  10. Thomas Waldron Says:

yeah i think they need a playoff system because the BCS isnt accurate because the computers just match statistics and dont measure what the team is really like

  11. tommy herrera Says:

the BCS is a joke. good article

  12. Corey Schultz Says:

I agree.. good article. there needs to be playoffs or something instead.

  13. im going to have to agree with chad miller and tommy herrera on this. BCS is just not cutting it. Great article.

  14. Danielle McCourt Says:

BCS is doing the job it has to go!
    nice article Tommi!

  15. Catherine Watters Says:

I agree with this totally. They do need to find another method of picking a title game because some undefeated teams dont even get in the bowls they should be in. Also look at the Florida Ohio game. IF it would of been Florida USC it would of been a better match up. But then again Ohio and Michigan couldnt play eachother because Michigan lost to Ohio early on.

  16. jesus tamayo Says:

im going to disagree on somem points becuause i think an eight team playoff decided by the bcs is pointless, too bad we cant control what goes on with all of these bowls the NCAA has to go through each year. Good article though, a lot of controversy

  17. Aaron Says:

They definatley need to find another way of choosing teams. The playoff system seems like the only way.
