I recently found an intriguing article that perfectly fit my current event topic. Journalists are now saying rap may be close to its end of time. They are saying that sales are down and growing tensions of the negative impact on the music is rising. People are finally starting to get upset of the rude and immature lyrics of the modern day rap songs. According to research, rap sales are 21% down than last year. In the first time of 12 years, no rap album was among the top 10 sellers of the year. People were recently polled and a whopping 50% said that rap had an extremely negative effect on our modern day society. I can see why this is assumed. With cursing in every other line and lyrics talking about sex and violence in every song didn’t convince me to disagree with the poll. Some people say that we just don’t have any great artists out now. Tupac is gone, 50 cent isn’t pumping out albums like he used to, and it is just not the same anymore. I believe rap does have a negative effect on our society. According to research, rap looks like it is heading downhill fast and can’t get back up for awhile, so get ready for a bumpy ride in the rap industry. What do you guys think? Is rap really ready to enter the coffin?

this is true some rappers did not put out anything good this year. they might have like one good single but that is about it
I dont know about that. Even though rap may be bad toward society, it is still the big thing for high school and junior high students. It’s also all played at school dances and so forth, so in an overall idea I do not believe it will disappear.
I agree with you jason,
Rap is going downhill and it is very true about
how thw lyrics are mainly about sex and violence,
there is too many young people listening to these
rap artists and they should not be exposed to this.
No it is not, i do not listen to rap, but i respect itas a genre of music, and people are free to listen to what ever they want. Its stupid how people are taking things such as music and tearing them apart. Music usually is expressing feelings or opinions and stuff like that and we as people are free to do that.
Very interesting. I do think rap will fall because it does have a major effect on kids today and when these song talk about violence they way they do, i believe it will fall faster. Great topic
I believe it’s also true that Rap music and that part of the music industry is not the same as it used to be in the late 80’s and early 90’s, when rap was in its prime years. NWA broke up in 1991, Easy-E died of AIDS in 1995, Dr. Dre hasn’t released any new material of his own in some time now, Snoop Dog has become a public image of Pop Culture and has lost his edge that earned him his reputation in the first place. These artists brought up real issues with their lives and the conflicts they face on a day-to-day basis. But today’s “artists” just make up rediculous raps using puns and innuendoes that just relate to sex and women and partying. I hope the current rap artists of today eventually die out.
I THINK THAT 50 CENT IS NOT GOOD AT ALL. HE SAYS IN HIS LYRICS A LOT OF CURSING AND TALKS ABOUT HOW HE GOT SHOT AND GANG RELATED THINGS. MOST OF THE RAP SONG SAY PRETTY DUMB THINGS. I DO AGREE WITH THE POLL NUMBERS GOING DOWN.
I liked your article concerning rap and its decrease in popularity. However, just because rap is becoming less popular in the public eye does not make it dead in any way shape or form. I believe that rap will still thrive in its underground form whether the public culture accepts it or not just like its humble beginings.
i believe it is getting old. There needs to be something new. excellent aricle well written!
I don’t think that rap will disappear anytime soon. There is too large of a following for it to decrease in popularity much more. Many people will stop listening to it but there will be that large loyal fan base whose culture involves rap and they will not stop supporting it.
Ok, first of all if you call 50 cent and all those other “rappers” that make albums similar to his “rap” then the definition of rap has changed from what i know. Rap to me is N.W.a and wu-tang clan speaking their mind in deep and acadimic verses. The ones who have started it all. No one can compare Wu-tang clan to 50 cent or any other “rap” artist. There should be a new name, a new clasification for those artist that just talk about getting crunk in the club. These are the ones that give the real rapist and intellectual thinkers a bad name. Thank you.
i think that you’re right…in a few more years, i think rap will be selling substantially less than it has been in previous years.
good. rap isn’t that good anyways. even though eminem was alrite. i do agree that rap has a negative impact on society’s youth and should be censored. well not censored,.. but kids… be kareful what you listen to. it might influence you more than you realize.
i agree with you abt the profanity, even though i love rap music, they do seem to let their mind out just a little to much… but hopefully they make the same kind of music with less negativity
It is interesting to see how rap has declined, and I think that rap is definately declinging IDK maybe it is going to corak soon, I would really like to see what takes its place.
Interesting article topic. I liked how you included details, the title was catchy.
This really upsets me because I like Rap. But this article is telling me that Rap is dying so its sad to hear.
Whoa!! Rap will never be dead its influence is so strong that new rappers are born everyday. sales rates dont mean anyhting the hip hop community is the only one that is supporting rap music and illegal downloading has a major part in the decrease of sales of ALL music not just rap. All of rap does not consist of violence and sexual lyrics, “Ganster rap” does. if rap dies out, parties would suck. so no rap music is not dying or going to die or whatever.
very informative. i think rap is going downhill. we dont have as much great rappers as we used to. good article.
YES I THINK IT IS ABOUT TIME THAT RAP “ENTERS THE CONFFIN” BECAUSE IT DOES GIVE OFF TOO MANY NEGATIVE IMPACTS. AND NOWADAYS CHILDREN DOES NOT NEED TO BE EXPOSED TO VIOLENE, SEX, AND DRUGS.
I do not know what you are talking about Jason rap is at its height in the world today. It has the best beat and even though the lyrics may be a little bit crude it is still very fun to listen to and it gets you hyped up. Just ask John Gruebel its because of the new age of limewire and other things that people are not buying rap albums. Good article though
It is about time that rap has started to fall off. Rap should never have gotten popular in the first place. It is barley music because the rappers talk in a sort of rhythm more than they actually sing and musically the tune that the lyrics are put to is barley music itself as there is usually only melody with no harmony. The fact that rap music is starting to die off means that people are coming back to their senses and enjoying real music again and that is good for everyone.
I don’t think that rap will ever not exist. Rap will never “die”, it might just become less popular.
i disagree
sales are down not because people arent buying rap but because they are getting it for free of the internet with programs like limewire.
rap is alive
yes i do think that rap music is nit selling as much as it use to
My cousin listens to rap while I listen to rock and I must say, from the constant overblast of rap from my cousin’s speakers and disturbing lyrics, I agree with its negative effect on our society.
this article is really interesting. it gives peoples opinion on a very popluar type of music and its effect on society.
Rap won’t die, it will spur a musical revolution just like all of its predecessors. A genre of music cannot die, people will always keep it alive. And music cannot really affect society in a negative way, any expression no matter what it is benificial to society, and those who say that it has a negative effect are just insecure about themselves. Just because a type of music isn’t appealing to you or you disagree with the lyrics or how one sings them, doesn’t mean it has a negative effect on society. In the birth of rock ‘n roll many consevatives thought it was evil and whites didn’t play it at their radio stations, and DJs who did play it were fired or fined. We see this controversy again with the rock band Black Sabbath. Many people were engraged over its lyrics and hard guitar sound, but in the end it was accepted and many believe they have produce some of the best music of our time. Even with other bands such as Led Zeppelin were denounced and viewed as an anathama as people said they could hear satanic messeges if a record was turned backward, and dispite all of this they are one of the best rock bands in history. Contoversy always put things into the limelight and it maybe why artists try to shock the public and create interest in thier music. To call a type of music a negative contributer to society is just ridiculous, and it makes me swell up with anger at the very thought of it. Rap will not or ever be dead because variations of it will evolve from it.
