What triggers moods? It may be the situation you’re in, people, a problem or maybe even colors surrounding you. A color does not only make clothing seem fashionable, a home more sophisticated, or art work seem more fascinating, but it affects the human’s everyday lives. “Why are people more relaxed in green rooms? Why do weightlifters do their best in blue gyms?” Color Psychology, David Johnson. Why do doctors wear white and why do nurses wear light blue and pink? Most individual colors do not only have a special significance, but can also change our state of mood and performance.
Colors symbolize many different things, but not in all culture do colors represent the same thing. Black may not only be one of the most popular colors in the world, but it also signifies capitulation and compliance. The example given by David Johnson is when priests often wear black. They are signifying “submission to God.” Black’s opposite color, white, signifies virtue and purity. It is said that doctors wear white because it also signifies sterility. The color green is concerned with nature, the environment and ecology. All colors symbolize different things but it all varies in cultures.
Psychologically, colors change humans’ moods and performance. It is said that nurse wear the colors light blue and pink because it relaxes their patients. Another color that relaxes people is the color green. “…red hues increase bodily tension and stimulate the autonomic nervous system…” Wikipedia. Red also increases heart rate and breathing. It is proven that people fight more often in yellow rooms and babies cry more in yellow rooms. “Yellow enhances concentration, hence its use for legal pads. It also speeds metabolism.” Color of Psychology, David Johnson. Fast food restaurants often use the colors red and yellow because they make you hungrier, waste more money and make you loose track to time. Colors affect people more than they are aware of, and even though colors are not a huge part of life, they too have their own significance.
Do Colors Affect Our Every Day Lives? by Gaby Castro February 21, 2007
New Technology by Scott Ha January 10, 2007
Technology has become intertwined with every day life. Newer, better means of communication and entertainment is constantly being updated with better, faster, and cooler devices. Here’s a little peek at what’s to come this Christmas season.
Currently Released:
PS3
Not your average gaming system that you would find these days but with new capabilities such as Blu-ray disc and an amazing amount of 3.2 GHz, that’s faster then the computer you’re on right now. With the highest available technology, Sony has spent a huge sum in building this console, in turn, causing the price to skyrocket. This unit goes for a whopping $500 – $1000!!! Good luck finding one for this Christmas season. I strongly recommend this for anyone with family members involved in the gaming community.
Mac OS X Tiger
Although this is an Apple computer, do not be fooled by its company’s past reputation. Apple has made a great jump in advancement with the introduction of the Intel Core Duo, a Windows processor, that now allows the Apple to run faster then ever before! With this new upgrade, Apples run up to 3.0 GHz, that’s fast! Although this is only the OS X Tiger, the future release of the OS X Leopard will definitely be held up to high standards for it may just be the computer to boost Apple in front of Microsoft! Need a new computer this Christmas? Consider any of the currently released Apple Mac OS X!
The Best Bad Influence for You: Celebrity BAD Trends! by Kourtnei Ryan January 10, 2007
Every year or so celebrities come out with some lame style of fad. First it was to get married, then it was to cheat and get divorced. Now it’s to acquire as many children as possible. The celebrities seem to enjoy this little game of “stay on the cover.”
Take Brittany Spears for example. Nine months after having her first baby, she goes and pops out another. Some celebrities like to conceive their own, then adopt as a way of saying, “I want my own, but it’s for charity.” It’s lame if you were to ask me. Brangelina recently had a baby in the beginning of this year, now its time for them to adopt so they can stay in the tabloid. Everything these celebrities do is a publicity stunt. Madonna sure didn’t keep her name out of the paper; she went and adopted a baby from another country. Now the father of this baby has said that he realizes that he made a mistake about the adoption and he wants the baby back. But in my non-important opinion, it all seems a little strange and a lot like a publicity stunt. And it definitely caused a commotion.
Recently a new trend has appeared out of nowhere; getting arrested for a DUI. About a month ago Paris Hilton was arrested for a DUI. Then of course, monkey see monkey do, Nicole Richie got arrested after a late night of partying and driving on the wrong side of the road. She was not only drinking but yes, doing drugs too, tisk, tisk.
Now, Paris and Nicole tried to pull off the anorexic trend, but it just didn’t catch on. Nicole was supposed to have been seeing a nutritionist to get help, but why is she out partying? I tell you, its all for the publicity! We all know about when Mel Gibson was also pulled over for DUI. He totally crossed the line and started ragging on Jews. I hope his public rant doesnthat doesn’t become a new fad among the celebrities because I know that the Pope, Jesus and Buddha will not like it!
I’m sure new fads will soon, probably in a week or so, but this concludes my lovely one-way conversation with you. All I know is that the new trends of today are having lots of babies and get arrested for a DUI. I don’t know what these celebrities are thinking; maybe they’re trying to escape reality, who knows.
I call ‘em as I see ‘em, and I’m sure you will too.
XBOX 360 VS. PS3 by Chris Lopez January 10, 2007
To 90% of all the gamers out there right now who have the slightest idea of current events, the big question is which platform is better? I n a nutshell I believe the answer is Xbox 360, with no doubt in my mind, only consideration to the powerful aspects of the rival Ps3. The first category the Xbox 360 wins in is price, obviously, for the Xbox 360 core system is $299. While the Ps3 20GB systems is $499, both prices being the lowest offered. The 20GB Ps3 comes with a hard drive; however you do not need a hard drive to experience and enjoy most games on the 360, plus you can always buy a memory card if needed. The Ps3 does not have memory card slots, an adaptor is required. And if you want the premium versions of both systems (60GB Ps3 and an Xbox 360 with a hard drive included) just add on a $100 to each one. The Ps3 may have the available 60GB hard drive, but the 360’s 20GB hard drive is removable where the Ps3 is only replaceable. Next category is game selection. Another win for the Xbox 360, considering it has a year head start which is a millennium in the gaming world. Just about all multi-platform game developers have made the 360 their primary choice due to the timing of release. This means the games will perform and look better on the 360, and the Ps3 versions will just be reenactments of the Xbox versions. The 360 is also far quicker to develop due to better tools, documentation and the fact that the 360 runs on 3 general purpose CPU’S vs. the 8 specialized processors on the ps3 which require direct memory access. Another key point is the impressive line-up of 360 games on store shelves. The Ps3 just launched so there is virtually nothing of interest on the system. Not to mention that some Xbox 360 games are already discounted, all Ps3 games will be full price due to recent launch. In multimedia, the Xbox once again blows Ps3 away with its full media center extender 2.0 experience, and it supports live and recorded TV (HDTV) over your home network; all along with shows and movie downloads. The 360’s device connectivity is top of the line; Microsoft built Xbox 360 can connect with an ipod and, ironically enough, with the PSP (Playstation portable.) which is pretty damn cool, along with many other portable devices. The Ps3 can play content from some devices and it cannot play protected WMA files, the Xbox 360 can. One of the biggest areas in which the 360 prevails in is Live (online game play). Microsoft has got the online system down, they have nailed it. On the Ps3 gamers are playing on isolated areas of connectivity in which you can only talk to other gamers if you are in the same game. On Xbox live, you have an account and a profile where you express yourself with a gamer score, gamer picture, screename, and a motto and so on. Also you have a friends list where you can invite to game, send messages or have a private chat with at any time game or no game. The Xbox live support is phenomenal; the Ps2 online support was horrible, now Sony is playing catch up but is having trouble since they took a huge leap with going with blu-ray technology. The Ps3 does have blu-ray tech. which is a new disc format with considerable storage capacity, 25 -50GB resulting in very high quality. The Xbox delivers a HD-DVD player; blu-ray disc cannot play on this and vise versa, HD-DVD is like comparing VHS TO DVD. Now besides the console war, there is one between blu-ray and HD-DVD. To explain this war would take another page, so in the point of view from the consoles I would go with the 360. For the soul purpose that the 360’s HD-DVD is a separate unit, while the blu-ray is built in the Ps3. Some might think, well the built in blu-ray seems more convenient. Indeed it does, but after about 3 years of playing DVD’s, including games on the Ps3, the DVD reader will burn out resulting in having to buy a new Ps3, where when in 3 years the HD-DVD burns out your Xbox 360 is safe and you can replace the HD-DVD player at anytime, and in 3 years the price of the player will decrease. Backwards capability is an issue to some; personally I buy a next-gen console to play next-gen games. The Xbox has partial backwards compatibility, Ps3 has near complete compatibility. Now some might love that fact some might not care at all, one more fact to consider though, is original Xbox games are up scaled to HDTV resolutions and some games are graphically enhanced. The PS3 is only able to downscale current-gen games to non-HDTV resolutions. For some miscellaneous information, the Xbox enables four wireless controllers plus wired ones via USB, same as Ps3, however 360 controllers can be used on any windows based pc via USB as well. So if you haven’t decided which next-gen console you want, choose wisely.

What is Your Title by Russell Crouch December 8, 2006
Schools are slowly developing newer technology into their teaching curriculum. First they are adding more up-to-date computers into the schools. The appropriate student to computer ratio should be around 5:1, to gain the most efficient learning environment. The majority of teachers use a computer-based technique to teach their students the material. A thousand K-12 teachers took a survey and the results proved the following.
Teachers that do not use technology say that they do not for three major reasons. Access, time and budget are the top three reasons that cause them from fully changing to using technology daily. The survey showed that teachers would want to spend more time with technology, have better access to computers that work and the budget to purchase reliable technology. The survey also found that elementary school teachers struggle more with finding the time to integrate technology, while middle and high school teachers struggle more with access to technology.
Many of the older teachers, who are not familiar with this new technology, can take courses that help them infuse this technology without changing their core intentions. These classes are available during the summer or night classes. The gap between technology and schools is slowly declining. Teachers in the 2006 survey also say that their technology skills are improving, with 63 percent of teachers reporting that they have, “somewhat advanced” to, “advanced” technology skills, up from forty seven percent in the first Teachers Talk Tech survey in 2003.
Four out of five teachers say that technology is critical for their job. Teachers use technology for communication, attendance, and grades. Technology also helps teachers for preparation and a tool for teaching students. Other uses of technology are found in the classrooms of today.
Hawaii: Mainland vs. Islands by Kathryn Bustard December 8, 2006
The areas of Orange County and Oahu share many of the same characteristics. Although divided by water and different cultures, both have the same spirit.
In terms of race and ethnicity Oahu, Hawaii has a huge multi-racial mix with 46% Asians, 20% mixed races, 20% whites, and 8.9% are Native Hawaiian or Pacific-Islander. The racial percent of Orange County is 64.81% White, 30.76% are Hispanic or Latino, 13.59% Asian, 1.67% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.31% Pacific Islander, 14.80% are other races, and 4.12% are mixed races.
Both regions also have diverse religious customs. Oahu is about 50% Christian, 32% Catholics, 9% Atheist, 6% Buddhist, and 3% Other. Orange County is about 57% Christian, 27% Catholic, 10% Atheist, 2% Jewish, 1% Muslim, and 3% other.
The culinary fields of both came from different backgrounds to form what they are today. In the island of Oahu, foods are very diverse due to different ethnicities of Filipinos, Hawaiians, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Japanese, Samoan, and others. A common food on the island is known as haupia which is coconut jello. Chicken Adobo is another favorite which is rooted from Filipino chicken and pork. Kalua Pig is the traditional luau dish which is Hawaiian pork. Poi is a thick purple paste that is a side dish to many main meals. In Orange County, American foods are common such as hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries. Italian food is also intermixed such as pasta, and spaghetti. Mexican food, due to its location next to California brings such plates as tacos, enchiladas, and taquitos. Asian fried rice, orange chicken, and sushi is also a wide favorite.
Climate in the beautiful island Oahu tropical and humid, bringing in 80 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit in summer and 60’s in winter with rainfall. Orange County is also a lovely location, yet has small changing climate, with 70 to 90 degrees in summer and 40 to 60 degrees in winter.
Dance is a key part of both cultures. Oahu holds Hula Halaus (Hula Dance Schools) such as Halau Hula Kailua Oahu and Puka’ikapuaokalani Hula Halau. The traditional dance in Hawaii is hula. Many Halaus also teach Polynesian dances such as Tahitian, Tongan, Samoan, and New Zealand dances. In Orange County there are many types of dancing such as hip hop, folk, salsa, belly dancing, and many other cultural dancing.
Oahu’s stores consist of Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center with other assortments of drugstores, lei stands, and traditional Hawaiian things. Honolua Surf Company sports casual wear, sweatshirts, shorts, and body boards. Another big company, Local Motion, specializes in t-shirts, board shorts, and island jewelry. Miura Store and Tailor Shop are known more for their traditional Hawaiian clothes of muumuus and aloha shirts. The every day attire in Oahu, Hawaii is very casual. Many locals wear t-shirts, shorts, and local “slippahs” (flip-flops). Girls sometimes wear flowers in their hair and island jewelry. Business men wear colorful aloha shirts to work, women long muumuus, a blend of 19th century missionary attire and Hawaiian printed attire. Orange County features Abercrombie and Fitch which is more of Casual luxury clothes of denim jackets, classic shirts, and graphic tees. J. Crew is also popular with preppy knits, tees, and polos. Hollister shoots for a more surfer themed store featuring jeans, denim skirts, tees and polos. Juicy Couture is a classy and luxurious clothing line with accessories, handbags, and tracksuits. Lucky Brand Jeans is a company solely dedicated to jeans, tops and accessories. Rainbow Sandals are extremely popular, called “The World’s Best Sandals”, made of leather materials that last long. The attire in Orange County is more formal and expensive. Most people in Orange County are conscious of what they wear and are willing to pay a high amount of money to look good. Most people in Orange County try to impress people with their money and high standards of living.
Music also portrays each region in different lights. Oahu uses Hawaiian music of Bruddah Iz, Keali’i Reichel, and the Makaha Sons. Jawaiian is a mix of reggae and Hawaiian music with artists known as Ekolu, Three plus, and Kani Makou.
Hip-Hop and Rap are also popular in Oahu. Orange County has a lot of Hip-Hop/Rap such as Ludacris, Eminem, and Lil’ Jon. For Pop music, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, and Chris Brown dominate. Alternative is also a widely listensed to genre with such groups of Death Cab for Cutie, Snow Patrol, and The Killers
The top 4 attractions in Oahu are unlike any other area in the world. The first is the outdoor activities, such as surfing, snorkeling, and sight-seeing. The second is at Diamond Head where you can hike and look at volcanoes. The Polynesian Cultural Center is the next top attraction. The last attraction that is a must see on the island is the luaus and Polynesian dancing. Orange County holds unbelievable parks such as Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Wild Rivers. The next attraction is the Arrowhead Pond Entertainment center which is always a good bet for a spectacular show. Malls are a big part of the area, such as South Coast Mall, The Block at Orange, Fashion Island, and the Irvine Spectrum. The last attraction of Orange County is its colder climate beaches for water sports such as sailing, surfing, or swimming.
Dancing Today by Erik Sandoval December 8, 2006
Today in society, people look at the artwork and the rhythm. Dancing can contain all different kind of elements. Examples of dance’s wide variety may be seen through the peaceful yet hard working type of dance called ballet, generally used for expressing feelings in a soft but heart provoking manner. I see it as a relaxing, soothing piece of work. Another style that is in today’s youth is hip hop. This form takes time and dedication but you do not have to concentrate as much, allowing the dancer to let loose with anger or just enjoy simply yourself. The only clash with ballet and hip hop is people think that hip hop is for the not so talented people. People think that if you do not have money and you live off the street, then you are lower then them. Well, I know from both perspectives that each takes a large amount of time and the same energy.
My name is Erik Sandoval and I am a student at Foothill High School. I am sixteen years old and have been dancing since I was six years old. Dancing has taken over my heart with a passion. I can not control it. Whenever a song goes on, it reminds me of something that the song is saying and takes me to a place that keeps me smiling. I will admit it was tough growing up as a dancer with the fact that I am a guy, especially around girls. But in the end it was worth it, because it kept a smile on my face. Growing up has been really fun emotionally and physically. Recently, I am a choreographer at a studio teaching hip hop. Also, I will be performing in a ballet called the nutcracker. So, the stereotype of ballerinas and hip hopers is not really what it sounds like. I thank god for giving me a chance to feel the inspiration of a dancer. As a boy I was given three choices: soccer, football, or dance. I would have never thought that dance would be my life, but I never realized how amazing it was to have people appreciating my dancing. The most emotional feeling I have ever gotten is when I was twelve years old dancing at the Irvine Barclay theatre in front of 15,000 people. I remember dancing and seeing people in the dark smiling, looking fascinated. It brought a warm sensation in my heart and will always be there. In life, I feel you only get a feeling once; it might come back but will never be the same. Dancing is something that I will never lose a passion for, no matter how much work and effort it takes. Every time I get that special feeling in my heart it only seems to get better and better.
Five Spots to Vacation on Winter Break By Haley Cordova December 8, 2006
In case you have not been informed, winter break is right around the corner. With hopes of making this the best one yet, the five top spots for winter break have been laid out with all of the insider’s secrets so that you may narrow down your choice to find your own fit for the vacation.
Mammoth has been a big winter vacation spot for all ages. At Mammoth resort, vacationers are able to take lessons with either snowboarding or skiing. There is all kind of different routes you can take from beginner to expert. If truly desired, you are able to lodge right in the, “village”, so you do not have to walk too far for the excitement. There are many cabins located near the ski resort within walking distance, so it is easy access for snowboarding and skiing.
In Hawaii, there are many endless adventures. For example, you can lay out on the beach, catch waves, and swim with the sea turtles all in the same relaxing afternoon. In the, “Aloha State,” you have the chance for surfing lessons and even be able to see the colorful fish under the sea snorkeling. If you are up for it after the fun filled day, you can sit and watch an unforgettable sun set.
Besides the popular “tour of the park,” there are several things to do while vacationing in Yosemite. For those with an adventurous side, there are many long hikes that will take you to some less visited sections of Yosemite. Along the way, you can pick up a book on bird watching and see how many of the birds you can identify while traversing the park. Night time at Yosemite gives many visitors a whole new sense of the outdoors. While camping overnight, the sky is a breathtaking light show of never before seen stars. There are so many things to do while visiting Yosemite. The hard part is not finding things to do, but it is finding time to do all the things that you will enjoy.
In Big Bear Mountain, there are many recreational opportunities available throughout the year. For most vacationers, the winter is the most favorable season to spend some time up in Big Bear. There are several ski resorts in Big Bear which include Big Bear, Snow Summit, and Snow Valley. If people are not interested in skiing or snowboarding, there is downtown Big Bear with its many antique and clothing shops. There are also many places where people can go tubing and sledding. Even with all of these places of interest, Big Bear still retains its small town setting.
Deep in the heart of America’s Rocky Mountains is the City of Aspen, Colorado. Although it is a popular winter ski area, Aspen offers its visitors much more than its world famous slopes. Five-star dining accompanied with charming hotels are abundant in Aspen. If staying in Aspen over the Christmas holidays, visitors can take advantage of unique shops that line the downtown area. No city is as beautiful and charming as Aspen, Colorado.
The Rising Victory of Daniel Ortega by Gaby Castro December 8, 2006
Once again Daniel Ortega, known for his famous years as president in Nicaragua and member of the FLNA party in 1984, had a presidential victory in Nicaragua. Finally, on November fifth, Ortega won 38.07% of Nicaraguan votes. Eduardo Montealegre won 29% of votes and on third place was conservative Jose Rizo having 26.2% of votes. During Ortega’s presidential years in Nicaragua from 1984 to 1990, he was known as a Cold-War foe to the United States who supported the Somoza (president at the time). His presidency in the late 1980’s was said to be conducted of civil war and “factional turmoil”. Not only did the Marxist ideology give Ortega a bad reputation in the eyes of the United States government, but he was allies with the Soviet Union, Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez, all in which shared similar political views. After his ruling years were diminished and ceased, the FLNA party was the biggest political influence in Nicaragua. Political views and government are currently taking a different path for Ortega due to claiming a vast change and leaving the “corruptness” behind. Jimmy Carter, former president of the United States, arrived Sunday, November the fifth during the presidential gatherings to state that if Ortega is willing to reach out to his one time foe (the United States), that relations between both countries will be improved. Unlike the past in which he expropriated Nicaragua, Daniel Ortega’s plans for the future are more open to tourism and foreign trade, even to the discussion of his past mistakes. Not only is his new endeavor focused on a new form of government but his major goal is to annihilate poverty and ignorance throughout Nicaraguan’s people. Ortega has attempted three unsuccessful attempts to presidency but on his fourth attempt, he finally proved himself victorious for presidency of Nicaragua, and maybe this time in peace with the United States.
Guitar Center: Drumsticks By Forrest Allen December 8, 2006
Recently, Guitar Center has publicized a remarkable deal on their store brand drumsticks. The Guitar Center’s advertisement for their sticks has been featured on the television, in their store catalog, and in various drumming magazines. The advertisements state that they are selling twelve drumsticks for only eleven dollars! Such a deal should not be missed out on. I am sure many drummers took advantage of this amazing deal for a set of twelve drumsticks for less than a dollar a piece! At a time and age when drumming equipment is extremely expensive and highly overpriced, it is good for these poor drummers to catch a break. However, many drummers have found out for themselves that they have been taken advantage of, leaving them aggravated and angry.
This colossal deal from Guitar Center of twelve sticks for eleven dollars was perhaps the worst eleven dollars I have ever spent. The quality of the wood used in the sticks is so poor that they begin to diminish after only one jam session. On my set, wood strips would literally be shaving off by the seconds, leaving my floor, drums, and pants covered in wood chippings, splinters, and dust. Furthermore, after two jam sessions it was almost guaranteed that the sticks would break. I spent more time cleaning up my drum set and carpet than I did playing when using those sticks.
Not only did Guitar Center cheap out on the quality of wood, but also the craftsmanship was frightful. In the, “deal”, a pair of the same sticks did not even have constant balancing points and very often I found that the same size drumsticks in the package had inconsistent weights! The balance points on any pair of drumsticks should always be the same, for drummers use a very strategic pendulum to do special rudiments, such as a roll. However, when one has a pair of drumsticks that differ in balancing points, the pendulum motion is destroyed, causing a noticeable difference between the left and right stroke. This ruptured pendulum makes the left stick’s tap sound different from the rights, thus causing the drummer to sound choppy and uneven.
Guitar Center should be ashamed of themselves for betraying their customers trust and advertising this horrendous offer. If the quality of their drumsticks got any worse, they might as well be selling two broken twigs from a tree outside the store. My advice to any drummer eyeing this deal is to look away fast! For this deal is definitely one to skip out on. You would be much happier and better off with going for quality than quantity on this one.
Top Five Places to Go In Tustin by Danielle McCourt December 8, 2006
Tustin is filled with many hangouts throughout the area, but it still always seems like there is nothing to do. However, with some careful planning and in depth details of each potential place to go, you will never have to waste a weekend again.
In the field of fine dining The Black Sheep Bistro has gotten the top review for restaurants. They are known for their best costumer hospitality. They have all types of different food, but they are most known for the rich mixture of white beans, vegetables, and duck, creating a wonderful stew for cooler weather. Dinner entrees are served with a small green salad topped with light garlic vinaigrette dressing. Dinners also come with warm bread and a small dish of olives before the meal. It is a wonderful, warm and nice atmosphere that has been rated the number one restaurant in Tustin.
When trying to find a good location for shopping, The Tustin Market Place would be the perfect place to go. It is an outside mall containing many different shops, including: The Loft, Bed Bath and Beyond, Barnes and Noble and many more. The types of stores range from sporting goods to higher end fashion. Nestled inside the surrounding shops are a wonderful movie theater and many other places to eat. It is a great place for the family to enjoy an afternoon or evening.
For great prices, quantity, and quality food, The West Cedar Market is the best choice for grocery shopping. The Market boasts a nice and cozy setting with all different types of food. It has many foods to satisfy any craving and desires for a plethora of appetites.
Diedrich’s Coffee would be the right place to go to get some of the best coffee in Tustin. They’re coffee is both tasty and delicious and its not expensive. Many have found it to be much better than Starbucks.
The best place to rent movies while still receiving the best deals would be Blockbuster. When it comes to over due movies, they allow a two week period of having the chance to turn the movie in. And if you have not turned it in by then, then they start charging you for the movie.
New Kid on the Block By Cynthia Martinez December 8, 2006
For those of you who might not know Mr. Rios, he is the newest counselor here at Foothill High. He deals with students with last names, “M-Rd”. He decided to become a counselor in order to have more male role models to direct students to a better future. Mr. Rios likes school as well, and pursued a career that lets him interact with young teenagers to better their future. Right now it is scholarship season for many seniors at Foothill, thus Mr. Rios takes a large amount of time writing letters of recommendation and going over resumes to do the best he can for the student’s futures that are hanging in the balance. It is letter after letter, non stop!
A regular day for any counselor is meeting with students, going over academics, issues of grades, and speaking with parents. Luckily for Mr. Rios, he became a counselor after previously being a teacher. Either way, whether he was to become a teacher or further pursue his career as a counselor, all he wants is to make a connection with the students and make a difference in their lives. His overall priority is to point the students in a good direction and that is what he tends to do.
Just a mere glimpse of his point of views is enough to reflect his admirable character. He believes that our school, Foothill High school, is an academic based school that is very competitive and organized as well. In terms of academics, Mr. Rios addresses simply, “academics set the mile-stone towards the future and experience helps as well.” Some type of academic independence is needed to make right choices and to be mentally equipped. Remember Foothill, do the best you can to keep those grades because they are the key to a brighter future.
Another controversial issue of our student body that Mr. Rios takes a firm stand is the subject of reading period. Should it just be a period to read or should students be allowed to do homework, more commonly known by students as “studying”? Well, Mr. Rios feels that the rules are set and that it is literally reading for thirty minutes straight. He dictates that it is immensely important to allow and encourage students to read. “It plants the seed to prosper, and once they start, they will look forward to Thursday.”
As co-ed advisor of the Rhythm of the Night Club along with Mrs. White, Mr. Rios states that the club’s goals are set to be reachable if they come together collectively. Powder Puff Football by Cody Caballero December 8, 2006
Super-star Brent Lloyd is one of the coaches for the junior-class Powder Puff Football team. He has a lot of knowledge of the game, being a fan of both College and Professional football. He is a Diehard member of the Raider nation. This Football team is comprised completely of junior girls that will compete against the other classes. Their first match up is against the vicious sophomores. He hopes to win but to also, “have a lot of fun out there doing it.” When asked why he took the position as a coach, he just thought it would be a good opportunity for fun. Also, the other thought that ran through his mind is that it would be, “funny to watch the chicks give it a shot for once.”
When questioned if he was going to prevail over the seniors, if and when he defeats the sophomores, his reply was a loud, “TEAM DOMINATION!” The junior girls follow this as their team motto. Brent has noticed many similarities and difference between the boys’ football team, which he participates on, and the girls’ powder puff team. The most differential aspect between the two from Brent’s point of view is that the guys have an easier time understanding the game than the girls do. “The guys just ‘get’ it, whereas the girls are just confused a lot of the time.” The girls seem to be more polite and caring towards one another whereas the guys are not. The male football team are just an army of drowns that do as they are told. This is most likely the reason why guys just, “get it.” The girls most likely overanalyze the situation too thoroughly and confuse themselves, whereas the guys just love to beat each other up.
Brent was asked how he feels to be a coach just like those that he has been mentored under before. “It feels weird,” he says, “I sort of try to stay in line with what my coaches do.” He was not astonished to find out that both the girls and the guys have the same goal; both sexes want to win the title and glory. “They both work as a team and seem to get a long together,” Brent observed while both coaching and playing. The first game is going to be in a few weeks, and the girls are all pumped up, anxiously waiting to face off against the sophomores. In his last remarks, Brent stated that, “they get really pumped, almost more than we (boys’ football) do to beat the other teams.” It should an interesting experience for both the girls as players and the boys as coaches.
